Born in Six Mile Bottom in 11th April 1907 [Chesterton 3b:410], baptised 5th May 1907 at Little Wilbraham, the youngest son of Frederick James and Annie Campkin MAPPLEDORAM (née DRAKE), father's 1st wife, who died in 1909. Father married Ada Mary BRIDGE in 1909.

1911 census...Aged 4, he was at Six Mile Bottom with his father Frederick MAPPLEDORAM [30] railway porter born Blagdon, Somerset; his stepmother Ada Mary [29]; brother William [6]; sister Margaret [2] and half brother Reginald [7 months]. All except his father were born in Six Mile Bottom.

He married Violet Annie STARLING,in Q4-1928, they lived at 60 Newton Terrace, Newmarket. Their daughter June was born in Newmarket in Q3-1929. He was a lorry driver in civvy street.

In the 1939 register his wife Violet [14-6-1907] was at 60 NewtonTerrace, New Cheveley Road, Newmarket with their daughter June [23-9-1929], later ROGERSON, then FORDHAM. Also there was his father in law William T STARLING [28-4-1875] a taxi driver.


Herbert was captured at Raffles Square, Singapore when Singapore was surrendered to the Japanese on 15th February 1942.
He died as a result of an Allied air raid at Non Pladuck, Thailand (southern end of Burma railway). Sadly he had volunteered to drive a lorry, a softer job than the usual tasks, and thus was one of the targets during the air raid.

He was moved from Non Pladuk to Kanchanaburi War Cemetery on 1st March 1946.
